Manufacturing
Two types of products are to be distinguished.
Basically similar, they do not follow the same manufacturing process.
1 – Solid enamel tiles (mass dyed)
Matt aspect provides high resistant products for heavy traffic both indoors and outdoors.
Phase I : An enamel paste called calcine is obtained by firing a mixture of sand, feldspar and dyes at 1.300 C
Phase II : This melting mixture is poured into basins of cold water allowing its molecular structure to congeal.
Phase III : Grinding and crushing transforms then the dry calcine into thin and homogeneous powder by dry process.
Phase IV : The required shape is obtained by pressing (100 kg/cm2)
Phase V : Firing at 800C, packing (mesh mount)
2 – Glazed surface tiles
Satinlike aspect, matt or shiny aspect, high-resistant particularly used on indoors and outdoors walls, as well as on private floors.
Phase I : Similar to above but the calcine is non-coloured.
Phase II : Similar to above.
Phase III : Similar but through wet process.
Phase IV : Water is added to the calcine in order to get a slip which is atomized in small granules.
Phase V : Granules are pressed (400 kg/cm2), into the required shapes.
Phase VI* : The tile is then surface glazed with a liquid enamel on which is added a mixture of dry enamel and slab powder. The whole, slad and surface glazing, is strongly welded during the firing and no breaking away is to be feared.
Phase VII : Firing at a 900C, packing and storing.
* this process is one of the Emaux de Briare particularities.
